History Behind Papmochini Ekadashi:

Once, Yudhishthira Maharaja approached Lord Sri Krishna and inquired about the significance of the Ekadashi that falls during the dark fortnight of the month of Chaitra (March-April). He asked about its name and the benefits of observing it. Lord Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, then proceeded to narrate the history of this Ekadashi, known as Papamochani Ekadashi.

The story was originally recounted by Sage Lomasa to Emperor Mandhata. The emperor expressed his curiosity and requested the sage to reveal the name and observance process of the Ekadashi, along with its benefits.

According to Sage Lomasa, Papamochani Ekadashi has the power to dispel the influences of ghosts and demons for faithful devotees. It bestows the eight bywords of life, fulfills  solicitations, purifies one's life from  unethical  responses, and helps in attaining  righteous  rates.

Celestial musicians Chitraratha, the chief of the Gandharvas, accompanied by heavenly dancing girls, came across a beautiful forest filled with a variety of flowers during the spring season. The garden was considered unparalleled, attracting celestial beings and sages who performed their austerities there.

In that forest, a sage named Medhavi resided. The enchanting dancing girls, including Manjughosha, attempted to seduce him. However, due to his spiritual power and respect for the sage, Manjughosha maintained a distance. She set up a tent a couple of miles away from Medhavi and enticed him with her melodious singing and alluring presence.

Cupid, flashing back his  former  hassle with Lord Shiva, decided to take  vengeance on Medhavi by using Manjughosha as his adjunct. Cupid's arrows of desire, in the form of glances, looks, and gestures, affected both Medhavi and Manjughosha. Eventually, Medhavi gave in to temptation, abandoned his meditation, and indulged in worldly pleasures with Manjughosha for a considerable period.

After spending fifty-seven years, nine months, and three days together, Manjughosha requested permission to leave. Medhavi, realizing the time he had spent, became furious and cursed her to become an evil hobgoblin. Manjughosha, in a plea for mercy, informed Medhavi that the curses of pure devotees take effect after seven days, and she had already spent more than fifty-seven years with him.

Regretting his actions, Medhavi sought guidance from his father, Sage Chyavana, who advised him to observe the Papamochani Ekadashi fast during the dark fortnight of the month of Chaitra. Following his father's instructions, Medhavi observed the Ekadashi fast, which destroyed his sins and restored his virtuous qualities. Similarly, Manjughosha also observed the fast and was freed from the curse, returning to her heavenly abode.

Sage Lomasa concluded his narration by emphasizing the immense benefits of observing Papamochani Ekadashi. It not only removes sins but also equals the merit of donating a thousand cows in charity. It nullifies the sinful reactions of killing a Brahmana, killing an embryo through abortion, consuming liquor, or engaging in sexual relations with one's guru's wife.

Thus, Papamochani Ekadashi holds great importance and is highly meritorious. Hearing or reading about it brings the same benefits as observing the fast itself. This narration of the glories of Chaitra-Krishna Ekadashi, or Papamochani Ekadashi

It is important to note that the greatness of Papamochini Ekadashi lies not only in the act of fasting but also in observing the day with sincere devotion, purity of heart, and righteous intentions. By engaging in acts of charity, spiritual practices, and offering prayers, devotees can enhance the spiritual potency of this Ekadashi and experience its profound benefits.

May the observance of Papamochini Ekadashi bring spiritual upliftment, purification, and divine blessings to all who partake in its sacredness.
